About us

We are a proudly independent, family-run pub in East London. We firmly believe in the importance of sharing great food and drink with friends have worked hard to create a welcoming haven for people here in Bow.

We prepare 98% of our food  in our on-site kitchen and we’re proud to support local businesses – our meat, fish and fruit and vegetables all come from within three miles. We keep it local with many of our craft beers too, featuring the best the local East London breweries (and distilleries for our spirits) have to offer. We also brew our own Angel of Bow session lager.

When we bought the pub, it was derelict and had a bad reputation. Our journey to get it to where it is today has been a labour of love. Thanks to the extensive bombing of East London during the Blitz in World War II, much of this area has been rebuilt. But our Angel of Bow, built in 1938, was miraculously left standing at the end of the war and the building retains its wonderful character. With beautiful hanging baskets year-round and an established laurel hedge out front, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d stumbled upon a lovely country pub slap bang in the middle of Bow!

After an intensive 8 months of refurbishment, we opened our doors in June 2017 having created a unique and welcoming space for people to enjoy each other’s company in. The eclectic mix of furnishings and one-off furniture has been hand-picked and lovingly restored and upcycled to create a one-of-a-kind pub experience.

This eccentric style has recently been extended upstairs and we’re now proud to offer five stunning rooms in our boutique B&B . Our secluded garden area features magnificent murals by renowned street artist Paul Don Smith and offers visitors a chance to escape the surrounding bustle of East London.

According to local legend, our Angel arrived at just the right time, with things so bad at the old version of the pub that the local vicar resorted to praying for angels to come to Devons Road during a bible class. Shortly afterwards, he was walking down the street and saw our refurbishment project underway. As he stood watching the signwriter add ‘The Angel of Bow’ to the swing sign he thought his prayers had been answered!

Meet the Angel of Bow team

We (Dominic and Odette) have been in the hospitality trade for about 40 years. When we saw how popular craft beer was becoming, we decided to open up a pub in East London, focusing on keeping it independent, unlike so many of our brewery-owned neighbours.

Our priority is offering the highest quality in everything we do, from our food and drink to the surroundings we’ve created for our customers. Until recently, much of the food was made by Odette – including her infamous Sunday roasts – and she still makes a wide selection of cakes for our dessert list.

If whiskey is your weakness, come and visit our sister bar, The Bourbon on Roman Road.

Our team care as much as we do about our customers and are here to provide everything you need to enjoy exceptional food and drink in good company and with great entertainment.

If you’d like to join our team, complete the form below and attach your resume.
